Coahuila became Mexico?s third state to ban bullfighting after Congress voted 16-5 last Friday in favor of reforming article 20 of the local Animal Protection Law. Humane Society International, one of the world?s largest animal protection NGOs, applauded the move.

Anton Aguilar, director of HSI/Mexico, said: ?We commend the Coahuila legislators that passed this important piece of legislation and the groups that supported its enactment. This is a significant step forward towards ending the cruel killing of bulls in bullfights once and for all in Mexico. The majority of Mexicans don?t want this blood sport to take place in our country, and we urge other states to take similar action.?

Bullfighting is increasingly unpopular in Mexico. According to Parametría, a leading polling agency, 73 percent of Mexicans support a nationwide ban on bullfighting.

UN warnings on the effect of bullfighting on children were an important precedent for the Coahuila ban. In June, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child highlighted its concern about ?the physical and mental well-being of children involved in the training of bullfighting, and performances associated with it, as well as the mental and emotional well-being of child spectators who are exposed to the violence of bullfighting.» The Committee urged Mexico to ?adopt measures to enforce the prohibition regarding the participation of children in bullfighting training and performances, as a worst form of child labour, and take measures to protect them in their capacity as spectators and raise awareness of the physical and mental violence associated with bullfighting and its impact on children?.

For a number of years, HSI has led an anti-bullfighting campaign that has proved successful in starting an educated debate against bullfighting in both public and political platforms, leading to growing opposition to bullfighting and paving the road for banning this practice.

Sonora was the first Mexican state to ban bullfights in 2013. Guerrero followed in 2014.
